Three Banks in One
Westdeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale (WestLB), Dusseldorf/Munster, is the
largest credit institution under public law in Germany. Our owners are the
State of North Rhine-Westphalia (43.2%), the Regional Associations of the
Rhineland and Westphalia-Lippe (11.7% each) and the Savings Banks and Giro
Associations of the Rhineland and Westphalia-Lippe (16.7% each). With Group
total assets of € 400.0 billion, we are one of Germany?s largest banks.
WestLB performs three functions. Firstly, we are a universal bank with a
worldwide presence. With our products we have positioned ourselves successfully
in the market as a specialist wholesale bank. Secondly, we act as the central
institution of the savings banks (Sparkassen) in North Rhine-Westphalia and
Brandenburg. We are the partner of the savings banks in both their proprietary
and customer business. Finallay, WestLB is the state and municipal bank of
North Rhine-Westphalia. We support the state in the implementation of its
structural and housing construction policy as well as the local authorities and
their entities in the performance of their various local and regional tasks.
A Young Bank, a Long Tradition
WestLB is a young bank. It was founded in 1969 by the merger of its
old-established predecessor institutions, Landesbank fur Westfalen
Girozentrale, Munster (founded in 1832) and Rheinische Girozentrale und
Provinzialbank, Dusseldorf (founded in 1854).
