United Way Moscow is an organization guided by a diverse group of international and Russian businessmen and women that, under the umbrella of United Way International, is engaged in promoting charitable activities and establishing a not-for-profit sector in Russia.
We are proud to say that United Way Moscow is one of the few foreign or domestic bodies that has the approval of the Russian authorities to legally collect and disburse funds for charitable purposes.
We began operations in Moscow Russia in 1990 when the Soviet Union was just starting to disintegrate, and since then have been working hard to establish the concept of charitable giving with governmental organizations and private companies. We have supported a number of charitable organizations and have helped guide their activities in the direction of modern philanthropic concepts as well as advising the Russian Federal and Moscow Duma (legislative bodies) and other governmental authorities on philanthropic issues.
Russia is a unique and very important country in regards to philanthropic activities. It is important to establish the basic concepts that we take for granted in the west. It is important to simply lend a helping hand. It is important to help show the way that a community can effectively and properly assist its “own”.
